5 Savvy Career Moves for 2010

If one of your goals for 2010 is to advance in your career, you're not alone.  Whether you call it a resolution, a fresh start, or a new beginning, a brand new year always gets people excited about the possibilities, both professionally and personally.

When it comes to your career, it's critical that you take a step back and examine where you are and decide where you want to go.  To help you, I want to share 5 savvy tips to help you navigate your career goals.

1.                  Get Ahead of the Market

Things have changes dramatically in the last 10 years.  Technology, a recession, and a global market have all had a major impact on the way businesses do business.  Getting ahead of your market and industry will keep you focused on future opportunities.

What's new in your field?  What are the latest industry trends?  Have you attended an industry conference?  Do you subscribe to trade journals that focus on your market? Knowing where your industry and market is going is the best way to understand what you need to do stay cutting edge, relevant and ahead of the curve.

2.                  Always Be Ready

Opportunity can come in all forms:  A conversation with a friend.  A meeting with someone at a networking event.  A request from your boss. A promotion opportunity within your organization.  A lead on the perfect position at another organization.  Are you ready?

Is your resume up to date?  Have you kept up with continuing education?  Do you know what you want your next position to be? If asked, can you articulate exactly what type of job you want, the kind of company you want to work for, the money you want to make, and how you can make a real impact to an organization?

3.                  Do More.

Finding a way to stand out is important in today's market.  This isn't about necessarily working longer, it's about maximizing your contribution.  Give your utmost effort to projects, meeting deadlines, and being a team player. Do excellent work because you take pride in what you do, it gives you the opportunity to learn and grow, and it gives you a solid reputation that will follow you no matter where you go.

4.        Proactively Direct Your Career

Don't leave your career growth in the hands of others.  If you're not sure what opportunities you have in your current company, ask.  Look at your current organizational structure to see if there is an opportunity that can be created for you.

Looking for a new job? Tell everyone you know.  Think you need additional skills or knowledge to get to the next level?  Take a seminar, attend a class, get a degree, find a mentor, or get a coach.

5.        Know That Change Will Come

The business world is changing.  Accept it.  What and how we do things now, will probably not be what and how we do things in the future.  Embrace change and look for ways to be one of the innovators.  And if your industry or market is on the down side, consider changing your career all together.  Don't be afraid to explore a totally new profession or line of business.
