How to Reach Your Goals

Whether it has to do with your career, your health, your finances or your relationships, setting goals is the best way to get a clear vision of where you are and where you want to go.

Once you set your goals, it can become a challenge to see them through, so here are a few tips to help you see the results you want.

1.  Break your goals down to bite-sized goals.  For example, don't say you're going to lose 30 pounds.  Instead, make your goal to walk 45 minutes every day or cut out sugary sweets and snacks.

2.  Set monthly goals to watch your progress.  For example, don't say you want to save 6 months of living expenses this year.  Instead, open up a special savings account and have a set amount automatically deposited.  Each month when you get your statement, you can see your progression.

3.  Write down your goals and put them where you can see them.  This serves as a gentle reminder of what you want.  Good places to put them include on your bathroom mirror, on the dash of your car, and in your dayplanner or calendar.

4.  Find like-minded people.  Get a friend or associate with the same goal and encourage each other.  By being accountable to someone else, you will be more inclined to stay on track.

5.  Remember the "why" of the "what".  Don't just think about what you want to do - lose weight, save money, find a new job, start a business - think about the "why".  You want to be healthier to be around for your family.  You want to save money to become more financially secure.  You want to find a new job to make more money or have a more rewarding career.  You want to start a business because you have a passion for something that will help others.

Remember, we all get off track once an a while.  If you find yourself getting behind on your goals, don't worry and feel guilty about it.  Just take a deep breath, get a good night's sleep and pick it up again tomorrow.
